  1. This is where my stress level would be off the charts!!!! I would be so worried about making an unhappy customer that I would be making boo boos one after the other!!! You are brave as well as talented!!

    1. Yes well, I must admit I have times… haha! And there are some people I wouldn’t quilt for because it would stress me out too much… but in general I’m ok. I don’t think I am that talented.. and I need way more practice!!! But you are the best friend because you think I am 🙂 xx

  2. Good one Joy. Yes, I’ve had an unhappy customer who spread the word, I was no good & it was all to do with wavy borders. I’d made a tiny pleat to make one of them lay flat & she wasn’t happy & told everyone so. I’ve fixed 2 really bad ones myself, by removing & resewing. Happy customers! Then, I show them what is involved to get them to sit flat. Fabric does play a big part in our piecing as some is stretchier, more tightly woven & even finer than others, so once sewn together, they aren’t always friendly with one another.(giggle). Do the best you can & hope the customer is happy. Take care.

    1. It is no fun when you have a customers like that, but it happens… you have to do the best you can and hope that the happy customers spread the word more than the unhappy ones! xx

  3. It is hard, I know I did what a customer asked for once and I didn’t liek the choice but did it anyway….. the result wasn’t that great and she never came back! it happens….
Most people are very happy and it’s important we keep focussed on that…

    1. You are so right Fiona, we need to focus on the happy ones and as long as we know we are doing our best, then we can keep going… xx

  4. The only person I know that has paid for quilting was so unhappy she unpicked it herself. I don’t know how bad it was (or wasn’t) but I’ve been freaked out about it ever since. I’d hate to disappoint someone to that degree. But reality is, she is probably just an unusually difficult person. She is a friend of a friend and she always sours up if our mutual friend mentions what a good quilter she thinks I am (and probably anyone else too!). Sadly, these people are out there.
Anyway, another great post. Thanks for the real life stories, it helps to know others have been there and survived it!
About the wavy borders…. I think perhaps the fabric can work against you sometimes. I have never had a problem until my last quilt…. and it’s the worst! Thing is, I was actually more careful than usual. Normally I whack the borders on! “It’ll all come out in the quilting” I hear my friends say repeatedly. Not this time, I suspect. I’ll be unpicking and starching and re-sewing for sure. 🙁 Anyway, I’m blaming the fabric, since it’s the first time I’ve used that brand and it’s cheap.
    Great post xx

    1. I also heard of a lady that unpicked an entire quilt she paid to get quilted! My friend, who is rather fussy, told me about it… I wonder what the full story was – whether the job was really bad, or the customer was fussy. I guess it could have been either way…. Yes, ok, I will take your advice and blame my borders on the fabric….hahaha!! xx

  5. I’m enjoying reading everyone’s comments and experiences …how many times have I heard it joked – oh the quilter will quilt that out!! One lady I know insisted on a specific variegated thread which really did the quilt no justice at all. The poor longarmer had to bite her tongue and just do it. I am guessing an email confirming what ‘you just asked me to do’ would help with difficult customers or requests, so there is some sort of communication trail – ‘see this is what you wanted me to do’ sort of thing.

    1. Yes, I think communication is important… as a quilter you need to be able to cover your backside so to speak! It is hard when the customer wants something you don’t think will look good… sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t… xx

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment! I will reply via email as soon as I can!
