May is MerMay & a Stitchalong!!

Did you know that May is MerMay?! I only found that out last year, when DD took part in it… so when she started talking about it again this year, I thought… wouldn’t it be fun to join in?
So What is MerMay?
MerMay is an Instagram art challenge to post a drawing of a mermaid everyday in May. As far as I know, it is mostly people drawing and painting mermaids… but we quilters and stitchers are artists too – aren’t we?
I think so… which is why I am hosting a stitchalong 🙂 (Any excuse, right?!)
DD has kindly drawn me some cute mermaids to stitch this month… which of course I will share with you all if you decide to join in 🙂
How does the MerMay Stitchalong Work?
MerMay Stitchalong Step 1
First of all you will need to sign up below… just pop your name and email address in the form at the bottom of this post and you will get an email asking you to confirm. It is important that you click confirm, otherwise you won’t get the free patterns!! If you put your email in and don’t get a reply, you will need to check your spam folder.. or contact your email service provider. In any case, let me know if you have problems.
MerMay Stitchalong Step 2
You will receive a different mermaid stitchery each week… there are 4 1/2 weeks in May so you will get 5 stitchery designs. You will also get an extra mermaid stitchery in my monthly newsletter, making it 6 in total!
Although you will get 5 mermaid stitcheries (plus the extra in the newsletter) my plan is to only stitch up 4 in May.. unless I get lots of time to do the others 🙂
There will be a link to the mermaids in the emails you will receive each week , so there is no need for you to remember to come back to my blog to download your free design.
MerMay Stitchalong Step 3
Each week we will stitch the mermaid together… virtually… on social media or a blog.
If you are not already following me, please follow me on Instagram!
My personal plan is to try to post my progress daily, and then at the end of the week post my finished stitchery…
You don’t need to post your progress daily if you don’t want to, but at least post once a week with #mermaystitchalong so that others can find you, and tag my account @daysfilledwithjoy so that I can see your pics and comment!
Bloggers
If you are not on Instagram and still want to join in, then you can! Just put up a blog post once a week for the month of May and send me a link to your blog post so that I can share it with others.
If you are not on Instagram or do not have a blog, you can post your progress pics to the Days Filled with Joy Facebook page..
Please like and follow that page if you are joining in.
Other or No Social Media?
Instagram and Facebook are really the only social media groups I am on, and I must say I don’t do a very good job at them!!!
If you aren’t on either of them and don’t have a blog, you can still join in! Just email me pictures of your progress 🙂
All you have to do is reply to the weekly email with a photo or two… which I will then share with your first name and the rest of the world 🙂
MerMay Stitchalong Step 4
The way you stitch up each mermaid is totally up to you…
- you can resize them to make them bigger or smaller
- use any stitch you like
- use any thread you like
- use embellishments like sequins or beads
- color them in
- use some applique
- or whatever else you can come up with!
…basically be creative and artistic with these mermaids!!!!!
What if you don’t have time this month to join in?
Not to worry, sign up and join in anyway 🙂 You might have time another month or year….! These stitcheries are going to make a cute wallhanging or quilt for a little girl, so download them while they are free!!!
I am so looking forward to seeing what everyone makes….. I will be checking in weekly on my blog as well, and I do hope I will manage to keep up with Instagram and Facebook 🙂 (My track record at both of them isn’t great!)

The Mermay challenge is over, but the embroidery blocks are now in my Facebook group Stitching with Joy!
i only do blog sites–no face book or twitter or instangram!!
keeping up with the blog is about all I can handle–
I did get the dutch girl and the mexican gal traced and think I have figured out threads for them—have you done yours yet–???? Have gotten a couple stitches in on the dutch gal–but that is all !!!!

I didn’t have any trouble signing up. I don’t do instagram though, so my posts will only be on my blog. Doubt I’ll be able to do one a week but you never know!
