Liz and I had a great day out yesterday, driving down to Costco and picking up some bargains. Now I should have taken a photo of the car because it was full! Must remember that for next time!
We timed our trip pretty well – the drive was good and we hardly had to wait in line at Costco… which is always nice.
Costco Haul
I thought I’d share some of what I bought – you may be surprised at a few things I came home with!
I tried to put most of it out on my sewing table to photograph:

I’ll zoom in for a closer look:

I already put some of the stuff away, like the boxes of resealable bags – they were much cheaper than the Woolies ones I usually buy, by the way.

As you can see, I got some bulk spices, honey, and ketchup… and last time we went I bought calamari rings and mozzarella sticks – well, they were both a hit, so I bought two more packets of each…
Can you see that packet of “real fruit” behind the mozzarella sticks? Let me show you a close-up, along with the same fruit I bought that is frozen:

Have you ever heard of Durian?? It is a fruit that my dad loves and used to eat when we lived in Indonesia. Its claim to fame is that it is very, very, smelly…. but apparently tastes delicious! I have never tasted it, the smell has always been enough to put me off, but I knew Dad loved it, so home it came with me… I can’t wait to see Dad and get it out of my freezer, because…well, yes… it smells!!
I was very excited to find this on special:

I have been wanting one of these for a long time now! I can’t wait to try it out!
What Came Next
I think the worst part of doing these big shops is putting everything away afterwards… especially when you buy in bulk…. oh and finding space to put it all!
(I bought toilet paper and kitchen paper as well – they went on top of our cupboard in our bedroom…)
I bought two bags of flour – the little one was pizza flour and was quick to deal with:

For my bulk purchases, I generally don’t put labels on the outside of my Tupperware. I just write it on a piece of paper and put it on the top…
The 25kg of Bakers Flour took a bit more time to put away:

And it made a bit of a mess!

It was a good feeling to see it all put away in airtight containers, though:

Now I need to start baking!
Oh, I almost forgot! I also bought 4kg of mince… and cooked that up:

It’s a big batch of my all-purpose recipe that I use for pasta, tacos, and some pies… very versatile. I like to keep some of it in the freezer for quick and easy meals…
Now with all the meal prep I have been doing, I am hoping to be able to get some sewing done soon….!!!!

What do you put in your basic mince recipe? Aside from mince of course.
Hi Shari!
I was thinking I should do a blog post about that, lol!
Here is my recipe:
Basic Savory Mince Mixture
1 kg mince meat (ground beef)
1 large bottle of preserved tomatoes (bought or homemade) (1 quart jar or two 250ml storebought)
1 small tin of tomato paste
onion
seasoning to taste (salt, pepper, garlic, Italian herbs)
Fry mince and onion in pan. Season. When browned add tomatoes. Add more seasoning if necessary, simmer for 20 min.
Can also add a large tin of mushrooms.
This can be divided into portions suitable for between 4 and 6 meals.
Use in the following recipes:
Tacos
Nachos
Macaroni Pie
Meat and Potato Casserole
Spaghetti Bolognaise
Lasagne
And more!
I’m not sure where you live, the quantities may be different in the jars of tomato sauce/passata, if anything doesn’t make sense, let me know! I’ll make a proper blog post about it one day 😊
Lv,
Joy xx
I hope your dad is tickled with your buying the durian for him. I’ve never tasted it. Mince must be what we call hamburger or at least that is what it looks like with some seasoning and stuff added. I have see-sawed about getting an Instant Pot. I hope you share whether it was worth it after giving it a trial period.
What a great haul! Those speedy berries look great, I used to buy something like that at Sam’s Club and make big cobblers for our church dinners. You will enjoy that InstaPot. Your “mince” looks delicious, what a great idea. I bet your Dad will be so happy with his stinky fruit. 😀 Do you make your own pizza dough?
Nice haul! Would you share your mince recipe? It looks delicious.
I haven’t been to Costco in several years, mainly because we have to travel at least an hour to get to one and we weren’t going often enough to make paying for a membership worthwhile. I always liked their house brand of things like toilet paper, paper towels and facial tissues but storing such big amounts of them was a problem in a small apartment.
