Welcome to the first day of the “My Favorite Quilt Block” Blog hop hosted by the lovely Carla from Creatin’ in the Sticks!

I must say I am looking forward to seeing what everyone else on this blog hop is going to be sharing! Get ready for LOTS of inspiration, because there’s a big group of us joining in!
I had a little bit of trouble actually deciding what my favorite quilt block was….! I mean, I like so many of them! But I finally settled on one that I use a lot – so I guess it must be my favorite!
So, ….. my favorite quilt block is…… the star that I use to make a one block quilt:

It’s also the one that I made a tutorial on, so you can make some of these quick blocks too!
I have lost count of how many lap quilts and table toppers I have made using this one large block.

I made the blocks in the quilts above from 10″ squares, but you can use any size of squares.
I used 2″ squares to make this micro mini quilt, finishing at just under 6″

Those are ones I have made in the past… but for this blog hop I thought I’d try out a different size square as my base.
(To get more of an idea of what I mean by different size squares, check out the tutorial here!)
Oh, I used this really pretty fabric that I bought from Judy last month! I decided I really only wanted to use the soft fabrics, so I left the darker ones out and added the white background:

So this time I decided to start with 5″ squares… and I wanted to make 4 blocks…

In case you want to make the same, I cut 32 background squares, and 16 of each of the accent colors.
Lots of chain sewing going on…

By the way, I love using The Cutting Gizmo (affiliate link) to cut apart my chains – it is quick and easy, and less chance of cutting into the fabric:

Once I’d done the half square triangles, I laid out all the pieces next to my sewing machine nicely in order….

and chain sewed again…

In no time I had four blocks sewn together up on my design wall…

I then had Sapphy’s help to put the borders on…

She needs practice sewing.. this is what it looks like when a cat pounces on your quilt while you’re putting borders on…

No thanks to Sapphy the top is done:

Before I pop it on the Gammill to quilt, I need your help…. I am trying to decide whether I will add some embroidery in the white spaces before I quilt it, or maybe some candlewicking to add texture????? Or will it be too busy? What do you think?
Well, that’s it for my favorite quilt block!!
The others that are sharing their favorite quilt block today are:

Thank you Carla for hosting this fun blog hop! (Go here for the full blog hop schedule!)
Now I’m curious… what is your favorite quilt block?! (And should I add to my white blocks or just quilt it?)

Hi Joy, I couldn’t find a place a comment on your e-mail that came so will place one here. Love your star pattern. Thanks for the instructions. Will be saved for “I want to do”. Nancy
Love your star quilt. I personally would add embroidery because I love embroidery in quilts
As you are asking for opinions, I would like to see some applique in the white, using the darker fabrics that you discarded to balance the centre blocks with the border. (Perhaps small flowers like in the border fabric), but it’s really your quilt, so your choice!! It’s funny that when I saw the picture at the top of your blog before the read more bit, I thought that the fabrics were familiar!!
‘Love your Quick Star blocks, as I am terrible at sewing y-seams, Thank you for the tutorial also.
Hi Joy! What a pretty quilt top. I love those fabrics you chose – it does look nice and soft. What size did your quilt top finish at? I probably wouldn’t add anything more to the piece, but that’s just me. Do what makes your heart happy and you can’t go wrong. ~smile~ Roseanne
Love your star quilt! How funny my blog post tomorrow is also on stars.
What beautiful stars! That block really lends itself to being enlarged and used as an entire quilt. But your multiple-star quilt is really lovely too.
Stars are some of my favorite blocks. I love your color choices.
I love the versatility of the HST. Just quilt it!
I’m a great fan of embroidery in a quilt. But this time, I think not! It’s just so soft and feminine and perfect as is,
This is a fun block and yours looks beautiful
Such a lovely quilt top! I love this block, too. I like how you can make it large and it makes a nice size table covering.
Love your choice of favorite block for this hop. I love that it can play nicely with others and stand on it’s own as you have shown. Looking forward to it’s completion and seeing what you come up with..
Such Joy in your post. I can feel the love. Your block is fantastic and I love that it can be a one block quilt. Your new quilt is so pretty with the soft fabrics. Some embroidery might be pretty, but after it is quilted it will be lovely as is too.
I think that since you wanted to keep your quilt soft and muted, that no additional work needs done prior to quilting. The border you added gave it a little extra pop to keep it visually interesting~ Thank you for sharing
Your stars look so pretty and since I love big quilt pieces, this one is my kind of block. I think it might be one of my new favorites! Thanks for sharing your pretty quilt!
A versatile block -cute little blocks or one large. They all look lovely. Adding a little embroidery could look nice, but so will leaving it as is.
You have made so beautiful stars with the HSTs I love your colors
This is soft and lovely just as it is. Very pretty fabrics. Beautiful kitty. Candlewicking, which I have never even thought to do on a quilt, might take it to another level. I may have to ponder this idea for a future project. Thank you for sharing … 🙂 Pat
I love the big stars, and you made an excellent choice of fabrics! I’m glad you shared this!
Love star blocks and yours is beautiful! I think some embroidery in the white blocks would be lovely.
Perfect fabric choice, I love soft colors.
LOVE!!! THANKS FOR SHARING!
I made this star in 1930s print materials in a variety of colors and it came out beautiful. It really is a great pattern and versatile. I think I’ll try it with one color. The aqua is beautiful. Enjoy your posts. –

A bit of handwork makes a quilt really special but since I don’t do embroidery I wouldn’t know what advice to give. It looks lovely so far though!
I’d let the quilting add the extra without competing. I love the soft tone this has. Makes it very peaceful.
It is a lovely block and I love the colours in your new one…
Hugz
I don’t have a favorite block. The quilt is so pretty with the fabric you used.
Beautiful quilt! It is lovely just as it is without embroidery, but a small motif in the 4 corners might really set it off. Love your colors!
Lovely design and colors. Soft. I think quilting with a colored thread perhaps is all you would need for that little something. I am sure whatever your choice it will be beautiful
Your single star block looks great! I’m going to try one tonight in fall colors, thanks for the tutorial.
This is such a pretty and subtle and soft quilt. I think I would do embroidery/quilting of the star in the same colors in the center. My favorite block will be revealed later this week!
lovely quilt the fabrics are gorgeous.
Lovely and thank you for the pattern
Your quilt is beautiful as is, but I think some candle-wicking would really make the stars pop! Maybe even an applique in the center. It’s lovely!
Very lovely and a great way of showing how you can create it with different size pieces.
I like it as it is, but the right embroidery could be lovely, too. I’d say let your own inclination guide you on this one. It’s plenty busy, and you’ll add quilting to it. That is a very versatile block, indeed!
Pretty colors, and I would leave the white, but do a really pretty quilting design in it. I love stars, too. And log cabins, and…
How pretty! It was the second block I made, way back in history! lol
It is a timeless beauty!
This is one of my favorite blocks too! I love your colors and quilting. #CreativeGoodness
I love the soft colors! Big blocks rock when you need something fast too!
Thanks for sharing your fabulous quilts!
Love one block quilts! And depending on the type of quilting you do, feathers in the white would look nice and will show up really well. Thanks for sharing!
Brandy
Beautiful quilt!! I would use the negative space to do some awesome quilting, but that’s just me!! Anything you do will be beautiful!
My favorite is the feathered star. Your stars are great! Love the large star quilt you made.
Ooo! Love this pretty feminine star quilt. It will look great either way! I wouldn’t embroider it simply because I’m not an embroiderer! But if you have that skill, and you think you’d like it, then go for it. I really like the fabrics you chose.
Log Cabins and stars are some of my favorite things..
I like stars, pinwheels and compass blocks. Keep it simple in the white areas.
Thanks for taking the time to make a tutorial for the Blog Hop! You really can’t go wing with a Star Quilt.
Your helper, Sapphy is a beautiful cat!! Thanks for the Hop–I especially like the quilt with one giant block star!!
Lovely quilt! And it is hard to find good help these days. My dog usually “helps” by lying down in the middle of my quilt blocks when I put them on the bed to figure out placement. Maybe you could quilt some pretty feathered wreaths in your white space; I just love the look of a feathered wreath!
Oh I like it!! Great idea to use 10 inch blocks! Its quite the stunner that way!
Oh Joy, I love the soft colors you used for this wall quilt. I think if I did embroidery I would do a tone on tone in the white areas! Whatever you do I know it will be beautiful – it already is!!Your mini quilt and the one block table cover are awesome!! Thanks for sharing!
Quilt it!!!! Possibly a pretty floral design? My favourite could be the last one I designed myself……..maybe?
Pussy cat, pussy cat, where have you been?i
On the cutest quilt I’ve ever seen.
Take care & I’ll talk next week.S
